The Commission handed down its decision in the 2009 State Wage Case on Thursday, 11 June 2009. It has recognised the uncertainty of the WA economy and the impact of the Commonwealth Government stimulus packages by delaying an increase in the WA minimum wage for three months.
Ruling on the State wage case, the Commission said that the increase of $12.30 a week to $569.70 will apply from 1 October 2009 instead of 1 July, the usual date for its minimum wage increases. The Commission stated that since Perth’s CPI had risen by 2.2% since its last increase, the decision maintained real wages for the State’s lowest-paid employees - although it was less than half the $29 increase awarded in June last year when the economic forecast for the State was strong.
